Welcome to an ongoing List...

Launched
on 13th July 2009, to coincide with an invited paper for the 8th International Symposium on Display Holography, Shenzhen, China , this searchable list is part of an ongoing research project by Andrew Pepper in association with colleagues involved in the social networking site holography.ning.com

Much of the public (non-industry) discussion about the impact, or relevance, of display holography in general and creative holography in particular, revolves around the exhibitions which have taken place. Until now there has been no easily accessible definitive list of those exhibitions from which conclusions could be drawn.

Although lists do exist, and data has been gathered, there is an accepted problem which involves large numbers of exhibitions with no 'data trail'. There were no catalogues from which information could be extracted and stored in archives or, they took place in venues which do not supply data to bibliographic archives. This is particularly true of creative holography where logging data about the events is not a paramount activity for the artist, gallery or hosting museum.

Sadly, over the past few of years, we have lost a number of key holographers, all pioneers in the field. (Stephen Benton, Yuri Denisyuk, Emmett Leith, Nick Philips, Dan Schweitzer, Anait Stephens and Rudie Berkhout). With them were lost details. Specifics about things they were involved with - where they exhibited, when and for how long.

The aim of this research project is to gather together details of exhibitions collected from people who organised them, exhibited in them, wrote the catalogues for them or simply visited them.

Most of the data here has been logged by members of holography.ning.com who were invited to 'post' information about exhibitions they knew about. This material has then been extracted and loaded onto this site so that it is publicly accessible.

Advantages are that you can search the entire site for keywords, names, venues and locations. All exhibitions are listed chronologically and can be explored by year.

The information is not complete - there are suggestions that over 500 exhibitions took place between 1975 and 1985. We have around 290 catalogued here, and are examining a larger period, so there are some gaps, but this is an ongoing project.

If you have information about any of the exhibitions listed here (corrections, observations etc) or exhibitions which should be included, please visit holography.ning.com - register and add information within the Definitive Exhibition List Group. Your contribution will be extracted and added to this site.

The list starts below with the most recent exhibition listed. You can explore relevant exhibitions by year, listed on the right of the page, or search for specific words using the search box on the right.
